Coolant Compatibility Guide
Choosing the right antifreeze for your Land Rover — and keeping your silicone hoses healthy for the long haul.
The single thing to remember: it's the additives in the coolant that matter, not the colour in the bottle. One additive in particular is the reason silicone hoses get blamed for failing on "long-life" coolants. Get the chemistry right, and a quality silicone hose will outlast almost everything around it.
The three coolant families
Know what's in the bottle
Coolant is sold by colour, but colour is set by dye, not chemistry. These are the three families that actually matter.
Conventional · IAT
Inorganic Additive Tech
Traditional ethylene-glycol antifreeze, usually blue or green. Around a two-year service life. Fitted to older Land Rovers and fully silicone-friendly.
Extended-life · OAT
Organic Acid Tech
Long-life coolant using organic-acid inhibitors. Often pink, red or orange. Four to five years plus. Land Rover spec from the TD5 onward — silicone-safe only if 2-EHA-free.
Hybrid · HOAT
Hybrid OAT
OAT with added silicates or phosphates for extra protection of aluminium. Various colours. Always check the additive package against your engine.
The one to watch
The 2-EHA problem
Some extended-life coolants contain 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) — a cheap additive that's very good at protecting cast iron, but slowly attacks silicone. Over time it makes silicone hoses, gaskets and seals swell, soften and eventually leak. This is the real story behind "silicone and OAT don't mix."
The fix is simple: use a 2-EHA-free coolant. Many quality OAT coolants are already 2-EHA-free — if the data sheet doesn't say, ask the manufacturer before you fill. Steer clear of 2-EHA, and modern long-life coolant and silicone hoses live together happily.

A general guide to typical factory coolant types. Always confirm against your own vehicle handbook — specification changed at certain build dates and VINs.

Five golden rules
Get it right first time

Never mix coolant types
Mixing OAT and conventional can react and gel, blocking the system. Flush fully when you change.

Match the vehicle's spec
Follow the handbook — older TDI and V8 want conventional, TD5-onward wants OAT.

For silicone hoses, go 2-EHA-free
Whatever type you choose, check the data sheet and avoid 2-ethylhexanoic acid.

Mix it correctly
A 50/50 blend with distilled or de-ionised water gives the right freeze and corrosion protection.

Bleed the system
Trapped air causes overheating — the 300TDI especially needs a careful bleed after a refill.
Matching hose to system
Choose the right grade
Not all silicone hose is the same — we build three grades for three jobs. For conventional (IAT) coolant systems, our standard silicone kits are ideal and far outlast OEM rubber. For OAT extended-life coolant — TD5 onward — our OAT-grade hose uses an OAT coolant-resistant liner and reinforcement, tested against Texaco Havoline XLC, to resist the additives that attack ordinary silicone. And for oil-laden intake and turbo air, our fluorosilicone (FSH) lined hose resists fuels and oils. Not sure which you need? Get in touch and we'll point you to the correct kit.
This guide is general advice to help you select a compatible coolant and protect your hoses. It is not a substitute for your vehicle handbook or the coolant manufacturer's specification, both of which take precedence. Specifications vary by model year and VIN.
